In 1936, a growing number of professionals and businessmen of Italian background were convinced that a
service organization could contribute a great deal to the betterment of life in New Haven. A cardinal principle
shared by our leaders was that this service club should have members who, at all times would consider
themselves Americans first although always remaining proud of their Italian heritage. The name Amity
contained “Am,” as part of “America,” and “ity”, as part of Italy. The dictionary meaning of the word
“Amity” is peace and friendship, friendly relations, friendliness. The name was accepted as appropriate
because of brevity and dual significance. Thus, the name…The Amity Club.
A core objective in the founding of the club was giving financial assistance to deserving students to enable them
to secure a college education. The Amity Charitable Trust Fund’s scholarships have grown consistently over the
years, and have provided substantial aid to a large number of diverse students entering college. Currently, over
20 students receive awards each year that range from $1,000 to $6,000.

The Amity Charitable Trust Fund (ACT) was established in 1963 to serve as the philanthropic arm of the
Amity Club. The ACT is a public charitable foundation operating under Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal
Revenue Code.
